Look around you: the chair, the air you breathe, the water in your glass, even your own body. All of it, despite its enormous variety, is made of the same thing: atoms. The Three Parts of an Atom

An atom is made of three kinds of particles. At the center is the nucleus, dense and small, holding protons with a positive charge and neutrons with no charge. Around the nucleus orbit the very light electrons with a negative charge, in regions called electron clouds or shells.

Because a neutral atom has an equal number of positive protons and negative electrons, its total charge is zero. When an atom loses or gains an electron it becomes an 'ion' with a positive or negative charge.

Atomic Number: The Element's ID

What makes a gold atom gold and an oxygen atom oxygen? The answer is the number of protons in the nucleus, called the atomic number. Hydrogen has one proton, carbon six, oxygen eight, and gold seventy-nine. Change the number of protons and you change the element entirely.

Changing the number of neutrons instead produces 'isotopes' of the same element: atoms with identical chemical properties but different mass. Some isotopes are stable and some are radioactive, decaying over time — the basis of carbon dating and nuclear medicine.

Why Is an Atom Mostly Empty?

One of the strangest facts about the atom is that it is nearly empty. If we enlarged an atom so the nucleus were a football at the center of a stadium, the electrons would orbit at the stands, with emptiness in between. The solid matter you feel is really electrical forces between electrons that keep things from overlapping.

How Do Atoms Combine?

Inside the nucleus, enormous energy binds protons and neutrons together. Releasing part of this energy through fission (splitting the nucleus) or fusion (merging two nuclei) is what powers nuclear reactors and lights the Sun. A tiny amount of matter equates to huge energy, as Einstein summarized in his famous equation.
