Look up night after night and the Moon seems to change its shape: a full glowing disc, then a half disc, then a thin sliver, then nothing at all. Yet the Moon itself never changes. It is a solid ball of rock about 3,474 kilometers across, orbiting an average of 384,400 kilometers away. Why does the Moon change shape?

The Moon is a dark object that produces no light of its own; it reflects sunlight like a dull mirror, bouncing back only about 12% of the light that hits it. The Sun always lights up the half of the Moon facing it, just as it lights half of Earth to make daytime there. But as the Moon orbits Earth, the angle between us, the Moon, and the Sun changes. When the Moon sits between Earth and the Sun, its lit half points away from us and its dark side faces us, so we barely see it: that is the new moon. When Earth sits between the Sun and the Moon, we see the entire lit face: that is the full moon.

The eight phases

Astronomers split the cycle into eight successive phases—four principal ones (new, first quarter, full, last quarter) and four transitional ones between them. The table below lists them in order:

The 29.5-day cycle

The Moon's journey from one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days, a span called the synodic month. This can be surprising, because the Moon completes a full orbit of Earth in just 27.3 days (the sidereal month). The difference exists because Earth itself moves around the Sun during that time, so the Moon needs about two extra days to line up with the Sun again. Lunar and Islamic (Hijri) calendars are built on this cycle.

Waxing versus waning

The rule is simple: the Moon is "waxing" when its lit part grows night after night toward full, and "waning" when it shrinks back toward new. In the Northern Hemisphere the right side of the Moon is lit while waxing and the left side while waning; that is why an old rhyme says a crescent opening toward the left belongs to the start of the month.
